Orchiata bark is a specialty orchid growing substrate made from 100% New Zealand Pinus radiata bark, processed through a natural aging method that produces a consistent, pathogen-free medium proven to last 5+ years in the pot without rotting or compacting.

What separates Orchiata bark from generic fir bark or composted pine bark is the aging process: it modifies only the outer surface of each chip — creating a layer that holds water and nutrients — while leaving the core hard and structurally intact. That hard core is why Orchiata bark lasts 2–3 times longer than conventional bark, which softens and compacts within 6–12 months. Natural Dolomite is added during processing to pre-set pH between 5.5 and 6.5, and beneficial micro-organisms that survive aging actively resist pathogens.

  • Orchiata bark comes in five grades: Precision (1/8"–1/4"), Classic (1/4"–3/8"), Power (3/8"–1/2"), Power+ (1/2"–3/4"), and Super (3/4"–1").
  • Orchiata bark's electrical conductivity stays below 0.3 mS/cm, eliminating the need for salt-flushing between repottings.
  • Classic grade Orchiata bark carries an Air-Filled Porosity (AFP) of 47–52% and a Water-Holding Capacity (WHC) of 55%.
  • Orchiata bark is sourced from over 4 million acres of managed New Zealand Pinus radiata plantation forest.
